The National Collegiate Taekwondo Association held the 44th National Collegiate Taekwondo Championship and 6th National High School Championship at the University of Texas at Austin on April 20 and 21, 2019. The NCTA president was\u00a0Dr. Russell Ahn\u00a0<\/b>and\u00a0the tournament host was\u00a0Joseph Van\u00a0<\/b>of the University of Texas at Austin. The Tournament Committee Chair was\u00a0Tara Sarathi,\u00a0<\/b>the Referee Chair was\u00a0Mike Wickham,\u00a0<\/b>and the Medical Chair was\u00a0Dr. Sherri Lashomb.<\/b><\/p>\n

Said President\u00a0Ahn\u00a0<\/b>at his final Championships as president, “Thank you very much for the successful National Collegiate and High School Taekwondo Championships at the University of Texas Austin. I am grateful for our dedicated officials, medical staff, referees, coaches and most importantly, athletes. It has been such a wonderful privilege and a great honor to work with such an intelligent and passionate group of people.” President Ahn will be succeeded by\u00a0Dan Chuang\u00a0<\/b>of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as president.<\/p>\n

The first day of competition on April 20 featured the black belt collegiate championship poomsae divisions. Winning these poomsae divisions were\u00a0Christina Castillo\u00a0<\/b>(Austin Community College) in the Female Individual category,\u00a0Kevin Jiang\u00a0<\/b>(Massachusetts Institute of Technology) in the Male Individual Category,\u00a0Adalis “AJ” Munoz\u00a0<\/b>and\u00a0Michael Pascua\u00a0<\/b>in the Mixed Pair Category,\u00a0Nina Anwar<\/b>,\u00a0Renee Zhao\u00a0<\/b>and\u00a0Elizabeth Zou (<\/b>Massachusetts Institute of Technology) in the Female Team category, and\u00a0Alex Kim, Shuka Park\u00a0<\/b>and\u00a0Richard Zhao\u00a0<\/b>(University of California, Berkeley) in the Male Team category.<\/p>\n

The black belt collegiate sparring divisions were contested on the second day of competition, April 21. The winners in the female division were\u00a0Jenna Slota\u00a0<\/b>(-46 kg, Northeastern University),\u00a0Sommer Jones\u00a0<\/b>(-49kg, College of Southern Nevada),\u00a0Logan Weber\u00a0<\/b>(-53kg, Johnson County Community College),\u00a0Starla Santana\u00a0<\/b>(-57kg, Miami Dade College),\u00a0Danica Deaton\u00a0<\/b>(-62kg, University of Texas at Austin),\u00a0Cecilia Cozza\u00a0<\/b>(-67kg, University of Maryland, College Park),\u00a0Jordan Stewart\u00a0<\/b>(-73kg, George Mason University), and\u00a0Amanda West\u00a0<\/b>(+73kg, University of Michigan).<\/p>\n

The men’s winners were\u00a0Cole Crawford\u00a0<\/b>(-54kg, University of Texas at Austin),\u00a0Isaac Weintraub\u00a0<\/b>(-58kg, University of Central Oklahoma),\u00a0Edgard Castillo\u00a0<\/b>(-63kg, University of Dayton),\u00a0Luis Orozco\u00a0<\/b>(-68kg, Eastfield College),\u00a0Joao Costa\u00a0<\/b>(-74kg, Massasoit Community College),\u00a0Connor Wilson\u00a0<\/b>(-80kg, University of California, Los Angeles),\u00a0Tyler Edmiston\u00a0<\/b>(-87kg, Northlake College), and\u00a0Adrian Villalobos\u00a0<\/b>(+87kg, University of Texas at Austin).<\/p>\n

Special recognition was given to\u00a0Starla Santana\u00a0<\/b>of\u00a0 Miami Dade College, who was named Freshman of the year,\u00a0Danica Deaton\u00a0<\/b>of University of Texas at Austin, who was named Female Athlete of the Year, and\u00a0Connor Wilson\u00a0<\/b>of the University of California, Los Angeles, who earned Male Athlete of the Year honors. Coach\u00a0Joseph Van\u00a0<\/b>of the University of Texas at Austin\u00a0was named Coach of the Year.<\/p>\n

Team awards were given based on the total number of gold, silver and bronze medals earned. In the Championship Division (black belts), first place went to the\u00a0Massachusetts Institute of Technology<\/b>, second place to the\u00a0University of California, Berkeley\u00a0<\/b>and third place to the\u00a0University of Texas at Austin.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

In the Combined Division (black belts and color belts), first place was earned by the\u00a0University of Texas at Austin<\/b>, second place by\u00a0Brown University<\/b>, and third place by the\u00a0United States Military Academy at West Point<\/b>.<\/p>\n

In the Novice Division (color belts), the same standings held with first place earned by the\u00a0University of Texas at Austin<\/b>, second place by\u00a0Brown University<\/b>, and third place by the\u00a0United States Military Academy at West Point<\/b>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In the High School divisions athletes competed for the title of high school national champion. In poomsae the high school champions were\u00a0Jacqueline Vasquez\u00a0<\/b>(El Camino High) in the individual female division,\u00a0Jospeh Yoo\u00a0<\/b>(New Providence High) in individual male poomsae, and\u00a0Vazquez\u00a0<\/b>and\u00a0Yoo\u00a0<\/b>in mixed pair poomsae. In Male Team Poomsae,\u00a0Sunny Chen\u00a0<\/b>(Temple City High),\u00a0Dylan Do\u00a0<\/b>(W.T. Woodson High), and\u00a0Yoo<\/b>\u00a0earned gold, with\u00a0Jenna Do\u00a0<\/b>(W.T. Woodson High), Aabia Hasan (Shrewsbury High), and\u00a0Vasquez<\/b>\u00a0earning gold in Female Team.<\/p>\n

Female high school sparring champions included\u00a0Karine Leclercq\u00a0<\/b>(-46kg, Westwood High),\u00a0Katie Smith\u00a0<\/b>(-49kg, Mercy High),\u00a0Sophia Venetis\u00a0<\/b>(-52kg, Falmouth Academy),\u00a0Sarah Ziehme\u00a0<\/b>(-55kg, Edmond High),\u00a0Judy Hong\u00a0<\/b>(-59kg, Decatur High),\u00a0Lauren Kheylik\u00a0<\/b>(-63kg, Milpitas High), and\u00a0Zoe Osborn\u00a0<\/b>(-68kg, Bear Creak School).<\/p>\n

The male high school sparring champions were\u00a0Bryan Shon\u00a0<\/b>(-48kg, Stadium High),\u00a0Kaishi Fukami\u00a0<\/b>(-51kg, Dublin High),\u00a0Tyler Balestracci\u00a0<\/b>(-55kg, Norwell High),\u00a0Alan Randall\u00a0<\/b>(-59kg, Stafford High),\u00a0Raymond Malphurs\u00a0<\/b>(-63kg, Bole’s High),\u00a0Chan Park\u00a0<\/b>(-68kg, Westlake High),\u00a0Hadi Zreik\u00a0<\/b>(-73kg, Farquier High), and\u00a0Robert Church\u00a0<\/b>(-78kg, Cathedral Catholic High).<\/p>\n
