On day 3 of Taekwondo competition at the World University Games, the\u00a0first sparring competitors of the US National Collegiate Taekwondo\u00a0Team went into action.<\/p>\n
Shaina Krause (George Mason, 57 kg) had the best result of the day,\u00a0reaching the quarterfinals and narrowly missing the medal rounds. \u00a0In\u00a0her first match, Krause fought Iloki Brutho of the Democratic Republic\u00a0of Congo. \u00a0She scored with a front leg axe kick early in the match to\u00a0go up 3-0, and also a defensive back kick to break it open in the\u00a0third round and win convincingly 6-2. In the quarterfinal round Krause\u00a0met a Russian player. \u00a0In a tightly contested defensive match, neither\u00a0player scored until late in the match when the Russian player scored a\u00a0short round kick to the body. Krause mixed it up but ran out of time.\u00a0The final score was 1-3 for the Russian player. \u00a0Krause was coached by\u00a0head coach Tim Ghormley.<\/p>\n
Jensen Ishida (University of Hawaii-Manoa, 68 kg) fought Breno Silva\u00a0of Brazil in his first match. \u00a0He scored early in the 1st round to go\u00a0up 1-0 and Brazil returned with a back kick to go up 2-1. \u00a0Ishida and\u00a0Silva traded body round kicks throughout the match to tie 3-3 and send\u00a0the match into overtime. \u00a0After some tense exchanges, Ishida was able\u00a0to score on a body round kick to advance 3-3 (1-0). \u00a0In his second\u00a0match, Ishida fought Cesar Mari Puerta of Spain. \u00a0He scored a\u00a0defensive back kick to go up 2-1 in the first round but gave up a\u00a0couple of head shots to go down 7-2. Ishida sparred aggressively for\u00a0the rest of the match but couldn’t close the gap. \u00a0Ishida was coached\u00a0by coach Steve Rosbardsky.<\/p>\n
Adrian Zambrano (Glendale Community College, 54 kg) fought Weiji Tian\u00a0of China in his first match. \u00a0He was leading 1-0 for much of the\u00a0match, but Tian was able to pull head 2-1 in the third and final round\u00a0and hold the lead. \u00a0Zambrano was coached by coach Steve Rosbardsky.<\/p>\n
Katherine Trinh (University of California, Berkeley, 46 kg) fought\u00a0Anastasia Valueva of Russia in her first match. \u00a0It was a close match\u00a0early on 4-3 but Valueva was able to break away on some head kicks.\u00a0Trinh stayed aggressive and attacked throughout the match but fell\u00a06-16 to the Russian. Trinh was coached by coach Reynaldo Soriano.<\/p>\n
