2022 NCTA Summer World University Games Team Trials

The NCTA is pleased to announce that the sparring and poomsae team trials for the 2022 Summer World University Games (Universiade) will take place on Feb. 18-20, 2022 at the USA Taekwondo Center for Excellence in Colorado Springs, CO. Sixteen sparring athletes and up to ten poomsae athletes will be filled by the winners at the trials.

Due to the changing COVID-19 situation, the situation surrounding the 2022 Summer World University Games is still in flux. Athletes should be adaptable and be prepared for the possibility that the Games may be canceled, even though we are optimistic that they will be held. The NCTA will endeavor to find the best training or competition opportunity possible for the Universiade-qualified athletes if this is the case.

Registration for the 2022 NCTA SWUG Team Trials is at USA Taekwondo Sport80. All athletes and coaches must be USA Taekwondo Members, and coaches must pass a background check, Safesport Certification and associate coach certification.

Tournament Information

Please click here for the tournament packet (updated with current eligibility info 2/3/22), and be sure to read through it carefully. The tournament packet includes the designated poomsae.

COVID POLICY:

All spectators, coaches, staff and athletes will be required to wear a mask in the venue during the competition. Athletes will be allowed to remove their mask when on the mat competing. All athletes, staff and coaches must present either proof-of-full-vaccination (14 days will have passed before the event, since your final dose); or a negative COVID-19 test taken within 3 days prior to your competition day (poomsae, or poomsae and sparring), weigh-in day (sparring), or first day on the competition site (staff). If you choose the testing option, then PCR and Rapid Antigen tests are acceptable, but test results must be reported by a third party (self-reported testing results will not be accepted). If you have trouble locating a convenient testing location, your local or county health department or Testfortravel.com can provide resources for finding testing locations that will provide your results in the 72-hour-or-less window).

3-ply medical masks, N-95, KN-95 or KF-94 are acceptable masks, and cloth masks will not be accepted. If you do not have one of these masks, then one will be provided for you.

Athletes for 16 sparring divisions (8 male and 8 female divisions) will be selected.

Poomsae Divisions

Representatives in these divisions will be selected:

Individual Male
Individual Female
Mixed Pair (1 male, 1 female)
Male Team (3 athletes)
Female Team (3 athletes)

Athletes for each of the above referenced divisions will be selected at the team trials. Each entrant will progress through a preliminary elimination round (20 or more entrants) where each entrant will perform two recognized poomsae. The top 50% of entrants will then advance through a semifinal elimination round (9-19 entrants), where each entrant will perform two different recognized poomsae. Finally, the top 8 entrants will compete in a final round where each entrant will compete with 1 recognized poomsae and 1 freestyle poomsae.

Collegiate Eligibility

Athletes aged 18-26 on Dec. 31, 2022 will be eligible. Athletes who graduated from college in either 2020, 2021, or 2022, or who are half-time status or more between Jan. 10 and Feb. 18, 2022, will be eligible.

All athletes MUST do one of the following to verify collegiate eligibility of half-time status or greater by Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2022:

  1. Use parchment.com to send an official transcript and use the address nctaeligibility@gmail.com at the bottom of the form on that page, OR
  2. Print and send the 2022 NCTA Collegiate Team Trials Eligibility Form, signed by your college registrar, to the address on that form (please take a photo or scan of completed form for your own reference), OR
  3. Verify half-time or greater student status with the National Student Clearinghouse (instructions on how to do this are in the tournament packet) and email your name, email address used with National Student Clearinghouse, and Clearinghouse order number to the email address NCTAeligibility@gmail.com

Failure to complete this step will result in an athlete not being allowed to compete.

The 2022 FISU Eligibility Form is not mandatory for competitors at the 2022 NCTA SWUG Team Trials; however the FISU Eligibilty Form will be required for all athletes who make Team USA for the 2022 Summer World University Games, so athletes may want to complete it and have it stamped by their University registrar at the same time as taking care of the NCTA Eligibility documents.
