Dear Collegiate Athletes, Coaches and Referees:

It is my pleasure to send you an update regarding the National Collegiate Taekwondo Championship, to be held in Cambridge, MA at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on April 7 and 8, 2012! This year is the second time that the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Sport Taekwondo has hosted the Championships, and we are excited to do an even better job this time around.

Hotel Rate Expires Soon!

The exceptional hotel rate of $119/night will expire in just over a week on March 9, 2012! Be sure to reserve soon – hotel rates in the city are in the $300/night range if not booked through our event. USAT Sanction and Qualification for USAT National Championships

Pending approval of the sanction application, the NCTA Championships will be USAT-sanctioned event and will serve as a qualifier for the 2012 USAT Junior and Senior National Championships. The top three poomsae finalists in any black belt division of the Collegiates as well as the top four sparring finalists in any black belt division of the Collegiates to compete in their corresponding World Class divisions of poomsae or sparring at the Senior Nationals. All color belt participants at the Collegiates will qualify to compete at the 2012 USAT Junior & Senior National Championships, in their corresponding divisions of poomsae or sparring.

Registration

Registration for the NCTA Championships will be conducted through Hangastar at https://www.usat.hangastar.com/login.aspx. All participants in the NCTA Championships must be USAT members. USAT membership costs $35 and may be purchased as well through the Hangastar site. Registration is expected to open within the next week.  Thank you for your patience!

Daedo Electronic Chest Protectors

For the black belt sparring divisions, Daedo electronic chest protectors will be used and provided by the tournament host. All black belt sparring competitors must provide their own Daedo electronic foot protectors. Colored belt sparring will be scored using click-button scoring.

Eligibility and Forms

Although registration is not yet open, it is not too early to start submitting eligibility and registration. The academic eligibility forms in particular need to be certified by your university registrars. All athletes must be enrolled half-time or greater at a qualified college as described in the eligibility forms. Athletes competing in team qualifying divisions must be US Citizens.

NCTA Seminar Results

The NCTA held two seminars on Jan 13-14, 2012 to promote collegiate athlete development.  The seminars took place in New York City at West Side Taekwondo (http://westsidetkd.com).  The first seminar, held on Friday, January 13 covered competition poomsae.  The seminar was led by US National Poomsae Team members Dan Chuang, Christina Park, Rene Chen and Lisa Zhou, and included drills to improve presentation, provide individualized feedback, and practice group critique. Also present were 2011 US National Collegiate Poomsae Team Members Brandon DeSouza and Erika Lee.

 

The second seminar took place on Saturday, Jan 14.  The seminar was headlined by the founders of the Eastern Collegiate Taekwondo Conference (ECTC), Sung Chul Whang (2005 US National Collegiate Team co-head coach) and Jun Chul Whang (2004 Olympic coach for Trinidad and Tobago).  Also assisting with the seminar were Dan Chuang (NCTA vice president, US National Collegiate Team coach 2008-2011), Chinedum Osuji (2004 Olympian for Trinidad and Toabago, 2007 Pan Am Games bronze medalist),  Christina Park (5-time US National Collegiate Team captain, World University Taekwondo Championships bronze medalist), Fabio Takahashi (Jamaica National Team coach), Dorian Alexander (Trinidad & Tobago national team), Lenn Hypolite (Trinidad and Tobago National team, Pan Am Championships silver  medalist), Rene Chen (US National Poomsae Team member), and Lisa Zhou (US National Poomsae Team Member), Elizabeth Shakhnovich (US National Collegiate Team Member, World University Games bronze medal), James Cadogan (US National Collegiate Team Member), and Jayson Grant (Jamaica National Team member, US National Champion).  Several dozen collegiate athletes were in attendance, and drills and strategy for the modern Taekwondo game were presented, and match sparring with coaching feedback was practiced.
