2013 NCTA Fall meeting (Nov. 10)

Mr. Hatfield: Historically there have not been many divisions in
sparring with over 8 competitors, and so for our team trials we should
start double elimination at semifinals instead of quarterfinals.
President Ahn: We need to look into the pricing of different poomsae
scoring systems.
SG Lo: I think we should have a single individual looking into a
combined pricing structure from each vendor that provides poomsae and
sparring scoring systems as well as sells gear and other items, so as
to get the best bid for our purpose.
VP Antipa will look into Daedo’s poomsae system, and SG Lo will look
into PoomsaePro, which was turned down last time due to costs.
iPoomsae is, of course, virtually free, as long as we ask our referees
to let us use their iPads.
President Ahn: We need to form an organizing committee that will
decide on various important items including the final schedule. The
tentative members are as follows: Alex Antipa, Linda Buell, Sophia
Chung, Rex Hatfield, and Michael Shea. We will provide room and board
for these members but not airfare (unless they qualify otherwise like
Mr. Hatfield). We will not invite Ms. Audrey Yap because of costs.
VP Antipa said he would ask if Ms. Melannie Lavarias would be
interested in generously helping out again. VP Chuang mentioned
bringing someone experienced to the tournament (i.e., not organizing)
committee.
President Ahn suggests splitting the black belt sport poomsae division
into say two to have more medals available for that division in the
interest of encouraging more black belts to compete; team trials can
be held the same weekend to determine those who will qualify for the
USAT Nationals.
SG Lo will ask Ms. Jeanna Mendoza, the new USAT director of events,
about the logistics of how our Collegiates can qualify our Free Style
poomsae medalists for the USAT Nationals. If this is not possible,
perhaps we can make this a demo event at our Collegiates. There is
the similar question of how our High School Championships medalists
could qualify for the USAT Nationals.
We need to move forward with the promotion efforts for our individual
and club memberships.
Future fundraising events like tournament management seminars are feasible.
Dr. Leslie Cheung and Dr. Jun Yoon at 8th WTF World Poomsae Championships

Longtime NCTA supporters Dr. Leslie Cheung and Dr. Jun Yoon have
accepted their appointment as referees to officiate at the 8th WTF
World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships to be held in Bali, Indonesia,
on October 31 through November 3, 2013. All referees will receive 3
extra full days of training prior to the competition.
Arguably the most updated poomsae referee in the U.S., with the
experience of four WTF Poomsae International Referee Seminars and
International Referee Refresher Courses under his belt in just a mere
two years, Dr. Cheung is a seasoned poomsae judge that has officiated
in multiple local tournaments as well as the NCTA and USAT Team
Trials. He has graciously assisted gratis at a number of USAT poomsae
referee seminars.
As an 8th-Dan grandmaster, NCTA Referee Chair Dr. Jun Yoon is one of
the most celebrated taekwondo coaches and referees in the world. It
was only natural that he received the Best Referee award at the last
7th WTF World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships in Tunja, Columbia.
NCTA would like to express its gratitude to both Dr. Cheung and Dr.
Yoon for their years of tireless service to NCTA, and wishes them the
best in representing the U.S. in Bali.
2014 NCTA Fall Meeting & 2014 NCTA Championships

The 2014 Fall meeting for NCTA will be held over the phone at 3 PM
PST, on Sunday, November 10. The call-in phone number is (605)
715-4920 and the PIN is 9170652. Member schools can suggest agenda
items to NCTA Secretary General Vincent Lo at vlo at cs dot stanford
dot edu in advance.
The 2014 NCTA Championships has been confirmed to be held at UC
Berkeley in Berkeley, CA, on the April 4 weekend. In consideration of
saving athletes’ and referees’ time and money, there will not be an
additional NCTA Team Trials for the 2014 World University Taekwondo
Championship (WUTC) in Hohhot, China, held later that summer. Please
support NCTA!

Grandmaster Yoon Kak Kim Remembered

The NCTA expresses its appreciation for the extraordinary service and leadership of Grandmaster Yoon Kak Kim. The NCTA sent flowers to Grandmaster Kim’s service, and many former NCTA coaches and officers were in attendance.
A letter from past NCTA President Rex Hatfield:
I am greatly saddened to inform you of the passing of Grandmaster Yoon Kak Kim. Grandmaster Kim was a staunch supporter of collegiate Taekwondo in the United States. He had served the National Collegiate Taekwondo Association as a presidential adviser and most recently as as member of the Advisory Board. He was a team leader and coach for multiple collegiate teams from the mid-90s to the 2009 Universiade in Belgrade, Serbia.
We have lost a friend and mentor. Grandmaster Kim truly embodied the concept of “hyung” or “older brother.” He encouraged us with his wise words or would bring people together so that all involved would benefit. We were fortunate to know him and will miss him deeply. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
