NCTA Athletes Compete at World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships

Congratulations to US National Collegiate Team members Rene Chen and Long Nguyen, who competed at the World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships in Vladivostok, Russia, from July 29-31, 2011.  Rene competed in the Women’s Senior 1 Individual division.  She placed 5th in her preliminary bracket, and 9th in the semifinals, missing the top 8 finals by the slimmest of margins.  Long Nguyen competed with his brothers Huy Nguyen and Anh Nguyen in the Men’s 1st Team division.  While they performed well, they did not advance to the semifinals. NCTA athletes Lance Supnet and Hazel Cruz also competed in the 1st Mixed Pair division, but did not advance.

2011 World University Games

As you may know, our National Collegiate Team will be travelling to Shenzhen, China on August 10th 2011 to represent the United States. We will be competing at the Summer World University Games along with 9000 participants from 174 countries in 23 sports. As part of our preparation, we will be attending a training camp at the La Loma High Performance Sports Center in San Luis Potosi Mexico.

Our team is raising money to offset the camp expenses and a donation in any amount from you will go a long way toward helping us! The National Collegiate Taekwondo Association has set up a donation page to enable our friends and supporters to make a secure tax-deductible donation online:

NCTA Athletes Excel at National Poomsae Team Trials

Congratulations to the members of the National Collegiate Poomsae Team who competed in the US National Poomsae Team Trials in Buffalo, NY on May 21-22, 2011! Two collegiate team members, Rene Chen and Long Nguyen, earned spots on the US national poomsae team and will be traveling to Russia to compete at the World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships in Vladivostok, Russia on July 29-31.

Rene Chen earned a gold medal in women’s 1st Senior (19-30) as well as a gold women’s 1st Team (14-35), earning her two places on the US national team!
Long Nguyen earned a gold medal in the men’s 1st Team (14-35) division, earning him a spot on the US national team!
Brandon DeSouza, with partner Rene Chen also earned a bronze medal in 1st Pair (14-35) in a very competitive division.
Long Nguyen earned a gold medal in the men’s 1st Team (14-35 division).
Ryan Lien earned a bronze medal in the men’s 1st Senior (19-30) division, and a silver medal in the men’s 1st Team (14-35) division.
Also, congratulations to NCTA athletes Hazel Cruz and Lance Supnet, who earned a gold medal in 1st pair (14-35) division and earned spots on the team, as well as former US collegiate team member Bobby Ren, who earned a silver in 1st senior (19-30).
Finally, congratulations to NCTA vice president and US collegiate poomsae team coach Dan Chuang who earned a gold medal in Senior 2 (31-40) – he will also travel to Russia to represent the US on the national team.

Collegiate Team Concludes WUTC Games

The US National Collegiate Team concluded competition in Valencia, Spain at the 2006 World University Taekwondo Championships. Women’s Middleweight Christina Park earned a bronze medal, Men’s Finweight Johnny Nguyen earned a bronze medal in Men’s Finweight, and Men’s Welterweight Jason Neville earned a silver medal. US National Collegiate Team Trials

The team trials for the US National Collegiate Team have been set for Sunday, March 19, 2006 in Denver, Colorado.
The winners of the 2006 collegiate team trials will have the honor of representing the United States the 9th World University Taekwondo Championships to be held May 16-20 in Valencia, Spain.
The selection procedure for this team is available here. The complete information packet will be posted here on the NCTA website as soon as it is available.
